LS Energy Launches Utility-Scale Battery Energy Storage System Units

LS Energy Solutions recently launched modular battery-storage system units for the industrial, commercial and utility-scale markets. This makes the company the most recent energy-storage tech provider to launch these complete units. Two models of the company’s energy storage systems are available for purchase.

The two systems include the Energy series, which is suited for two- to four-hour applications, and the Power series, which is suited for one-hour applications. The systems are factory preassembled, using the company’s fourth-generation string inverters that are housed in an enclosure with li-ion batteries. Both the Energy and Power series systems can be supplemented by adding new enclosures that are usually transported without string inverters. This is in addition to being equipped with thermal management.

The systems, which are operable from 215 VDC to 1350 VDC, have been designed to operate in altitudes of roughly 3,200 feet above sea level and temperatures of between -5o C to 55o C. The Energy series units have 0.6MW to 1MW rated usable power and 2.30 MWh using Samsung SDI batteries or 2.55 MWh rated AC energy using li-ion batteries. The Power series units have 0.95 MWh rated AC energy and 0.87 rated power reach using SDI batteries. Both models are appropriate for applications for smaller commercial, industrial and utility-scale installations that may need lots of power.

Steve Fludder, CEO of LS Energy Solutions, stated that its AiON Energy Storage Systems were built on the prior generational solutions to offer its consumers with an integrated product that eliminated the need to have on-site labor. Fludder noted that the AiOn container had everything required for seamless and fast installation. He added that the new models also built on the company’s experience as pioneers in the energy storage market, which it has been involved in for more than a decade. The company has grown since it was established via the acquisition of the grid-tied energy division in Parker Hannifin, a U.S. control tech manufacturer, by LS Electric.

LS Electric is a subsidiary of the LS Group, which is a South Korean conglomerate. Fludder joined the company last year after working at NEC Energy Solutions. NEC Energy Solutions was acquired by LG Energy.

The launch also facilitates the company’s entry into competition with products from key players in the industry including Powin Energy, Leclanché, Saft, Wärtsilä and Tesla, whose products are also factory assembled energy storage system solutions for large-scale applications.

The li-ion energy storage systems will likely face a run for their money as a number of companies including StorEn Technologies Inc. fine tune other technologies, such as redox flow batteries, which have plenty of benefits in the utility-scale, long-term, energy-storage segment.
