How the Mining Industry is Providing Minerals Securely during the Pandemic

Morning Consult conducted and recently released polling figures that reveal that most of the American voters are concerned about the safety of supply chains in America. With international supply chains suffering due to border restraints, U.S. policymakers and the general American public have become aware of the dependence the nation has on foreign mineral imports.

The mining industry is one of the strong foundations and a key industry of the U.S. supply chain as it provides raw materials required in most industries and consumer products, including necessary health care applications. A report published by the World Bank Group found that the production of various minerals could rise by almost 500% near the year 2050. The mineral demand in the industry has remained steady during this period, which is positive as it is a key industry that produces minerals required in almost all features of life.

The most technologically advanced facilities to ever exist on earth are present in mines. These, combined with health and safety protocols as well as social distancing measures have ensured the mining industry can carry on with its operations during this pandemic while staying ahead of the curve.

For example, the Hecla Mining Company (NYSE: HL) has applied haul and dump equipment, fully independently operated underground truck operations as well as tele-remote-controlled loaders, thus ensuring the safety of workers while staying compliant with social distancing measures. Most recently, the Newmont Corporation reported that its Boddington mine is about to be the first autonomous gold mine in the world. Utilization of autonomous vehicles also ensures that mine workers are kept safe during this pandemic.

Employing the use of drone technology in mines as well as survey mine walls and complete 3D mapping may also keep miners out of harm’s way as they’ll be on the surface. Drone technology increases the efficiency of mineral locations while providing operations with the potential to cover larger areas of land, thus helping adhere to the new safety and health rules.

For the longest time, the mining industry has implemented automation on site to improve worker safety. It is noted by the Mine Safety and Health Administration that the safest year in mining history was 2019.

In addition to these, programs such as CORESafety have provided a foundation to make use of technology involving remote-controlled operations to make methods used in mines safer and decrease the spread of COVID-19 in mining sites.
