How Cleaner Energy Can Be Derived from Mining

With more countries around the globe adopting green standards and using more renewable energies, the natural resource industry is presented with the rather important role of providing the minerals that renewable energy relies on. For instance, by 2050, the International Renewable Energy Agency expects that the worldwide capacity of solar power will be at 8,519 GW. The production of PV panels requires rare earth elements such as cadmium and indium as well as copper and aluminum. Likewise, turbine generators need neodymium, which is used in magnets. And if you didn’t know already, wind turbines are manufactured from steel, which means…

Push to Low Carbon Emissions May Benefit Mining Firms

With more companies and countries going green, the demand for some metals and other renewable energies is bound to increase. This makes mining an important feature in a low-carbon future. Some of the minerals whose demand may grow include rare earth elements, cobalt and nickel. The executive director of Mining Industry ML Ed Moriarity explains that the demand for both cobalt and nickel is expected to increase by more than 1,000% by the year 2050. Both cobalt and nickel are used in batteries of electric vehicles. The battery industry is also forecasted to grow in the next decade to $90…

Copper’s Value Projected to Increase as Bull Run Begins

Last week, copper was trading at $7,616ton, its highest price since 2013. Interestingly, the metal’s price is increasing as various pharmaceutical firms announce the development of effective coronavirus vaccines. In fact, the value of copper grew by 12.24% last month, as hopes of the global economy opening to full capacity grow. The growth in value may also be attributed to improved manufacturing activity in China, Eurozone and the United States. Last month, factories in China reported huge improvements, the strongest in more than a decade. New orders surpassed 10-year highs with the PMI of Caixin China General Manufacturing posting at…

Gold Production in Australia Drops

Despite the global coronavirus pandemic and its effects, the Australian mining sector has pushed on. In this year’s second quarter, April through June, miners in Australia yielded 95 tons of gold. This was a 10% growth from the first quarter output of 77 tons. However, in the third quarter of the year, the output of gold decreased to 81 tons, a four-ton decline from the quarter. The decline was mainly a result of lower output in some of the biggest gold mines in the country. Mining consultant firm Surbiton Associates, which specializes in gold, believes that despite this decline in…

EU Launches Initiative to Improve Raw Minerals’ Access

The European Union has set in motion a scheme whose aim is to help secure access to 30 fundamental raw materials. This will be done by promoting the recycling of critical elements, especially rare earth elements (REEs), and by growing domestic production. The collaboration of 300 governments, business associations and firms will help the European Raw Materials Alliance Center (ERMA) reduce Europe’s import dependence from resource-rich nations, particularly China. China is the main exporter for the EU’s rare earth elements, making up 98% of the union’s imports. Other countries that provide imports include Brazil, which provides the European Union with…
